Coordinating vault placement at Sparrow Square

A vault placement is a visible milestone in a much longer coordination process. At Sparrow Square, ESE coordinated the placement of precast electrical vault sections around limited access, an active roadway and a deep excavation.

What to take away

  • Access and lift coordination need to be resolved together.
  • Field communication connects the electrical team, lifting operation and site supervision.
  • A placement milestone should be documented separately from the remaining utility and electrical work.

The milestone on site

The placement brought together the field team, crane operator and site supervision in a constrained working area. Clear communication between those teams was central to coordinating the operation.

This project note focuses on the placement milestone. Electrical installation, inspections, utility acceptance and energization should be tracked as separate project stages, with their own responsibilities and records.

Plan the interfaces before the lift

For a developer or general contractor planning similar work, the useful conversation starts with the interfaces between trades. A delivery sequence can affect access. Excavation readiness can affect the placement window. Electrical requirements can affect what needs to be checked before a section is set.

Bring those dependencies into one coordination discussion early. The project-specific lift planning and safety responsibilities remain with the responsible qualified parties; a coordination checklist is not a lifting plan.

  • Confirm which team controls delivery access and the working area.
  • Identify the drawings, dimensions and interfaces that need to be agreed before placement.
  • Assign responsibility for readiness checks and field communication.
  • Record outstanding questions before committing to the placement sequence.

Make the next handoff clear

A project update is most useful when everyone understands what the milestone means for the next activity. Record what was placed, what was checked, what remains open and which team owns the next step. Do not use a successful placement as a substitute for separate records of installation, inspection or utility approval.

For an early utility-scope enquiry, share the project stage, available drawings, access constraints and the utility coordination already completed. ESE can then discuss the electrical scope and the interfaces that need further review.
